Mark was twelve years old when he first found and read his older sister’s journal. It was hidden in a gap behind the top drawer of one of her nightstands. He knew he’d be in big trouble if his sister, Beth, or his parents found out but he was careful and what was the big deal? His sister was two years older, and the journal was just full of silly, teeny girl stuff about boy stars, school, and friends.
Still, Mark found himself obsessed with what Beth was writing, and he caught up on her additions whenever he found himself alone in the house. Over the next couple of years, the entries advanced to dealing with boys at school, new clothes, smoking, and a little shoplifting.
Before long, most of the entries dealt with a boyfriend, their kissing sessions, and his roving hands. Other entries were about friendships gone bad, more about clothes, and her first hits of weed.
During her fifteenth year she wrote that she went “all-the-way” with her boyfriend. “It hurt some but was worth it.” After that, her entries dealt with the many “boyfriends” she went through. She always mentioned how he did and peculiarities such as unusual size or has a birthmark.
Mark knew he really shouldn’t be reading Beth’s private journal but couldn’t stop. At one point he noticed that Trey, a senior in high school, was becoming extra friendly and even protective. In checking Beth’s journal, he found that Trey was her current boyfriend and “was really into her.”
Beth couldn’t stick with only one guy for long. She wrote about “doing it” with someone else. Trey found out and was heartbroken and angry. He broke up with Beth and started bullying Mark. This made Mark angry enough to let details slip of an embarrassing peculiarity of Trey’s “equipment” his sister wrote about. Since Beth was his first, he was convinced that she had to have spread it. He beat Beth and then spread some details of Beth’s “special skills.”
Beth’s parents got the police involved and Trey ended up spending some time in juvey. Not much later, Beth was identified as the central node of the biggest STD outbreak the school system ever had. Mark continued with his voyeurism.
